The national movement, the left, the liberal centre, the rural-popular current and the Islamist current: where do the parties in the 2026 parliament come from?
The national movement Mainly represented by the Istiqlal Party, the oldest party still active (1943), which led the struggle for independence . It won 65 seats in 2026 .
The left The governing left emerged from Istiqlal in 1959 (the UNFP, then the USFP) and from the Moroccan Communist Party (the PPS) . The Left Alliance represents a more radical current calling for a parliamentary monarchy . In 2026 this family won 26 seats for the USFP, 19 for the PPS, 8 for the Left Alliance and 2 for the Front of Democratic Forces .
The liberal centre Parties that often emerged close to power before charting their own course: the RNI (1978), the Constitutional Union (1983) and the PAM (2008) . Today it is the largest family: 97 + 66 + 17 seats .
The popular current The Popular Movement was founded in 1957 on a rural and Amazigh base ; the National Popular Movement, which rejoined it in 2006, belongs to the same family .
The Islamist current The PJD grew out of the Constitutional Democratic Movement (1967) and took its current name in 1998 ; it holds 54 seats in 2026 .
