Turnout from 85% to 38%
Reading six decades of turnout in legislative elections.
Reading six decades of turnout in legislative elections.
The figures Turnout at the first legislative election was 71.79% in 1963 , rising to about 85% in 1970 and 82.36% in 1977 . Then a downward curve began: 67.43% in 1984, 62.75% in 1993, 58.30% in 1997 and 51.61% in 2002 .
The low point and the rebounds Turnout hit bottom in 2007 at about 37% , rose to 45.5% in 2011 amid the protests and the new constitution , was 43% in 2016 and 50.86% in 2021, when legislative, regional and communal elections were held together . It fell again to 38.08% in 2026 .
How to read it Old and recent figures should be compared with caution: elections in the 1960s and 1970s took place in radically different conditions of competitiveness and oversight. Since 2007 the swings seem tied to how much is at stake: turnout rises when a vote is linked to a major change (2011) or when elections are held together (2021) .
