The PJD strengthened its lead with 125 seats and the PAM came second with 102; six months of deadlock ended with Benkirane’s dismissal and Othmani’s appointment.
The election was held on 7 October 2016 with 43% turnout. The PJD improved to 125 seats (27.88%), while the PAM jumped to 102 seats (20.95%), producing an unprecedented two-party polarisation .
Six months of "blockage" The King reappointed Benkirane on 10 October 2016, but coalition talks stalled over the conditions set by the RNI under Aziz Akhannouch. On 15 March 2017 Benkirane was dismissed and Saadeddine Othmani appointed; on 5 April 2017 he formed a six-party government: PJD, RNI, Popular Movement, USFP, Constitutional Union and PPS .
Many analysts argue that accepting conditions the party had refused under Benkirane damaged its image among its voters, one of the preludes to its 2021 collapse .
