The legislative election of 8 September 2021 was held alongside regional and communal elections and, for the first time, under an electoral quotient calculated on registered voters rather than votes cast, a rule opposed almost solely by the PJD. Turnout rose to 50.86% .

The RNI under Aziz Akhannouch came first with 102 seats, followed by the PAM (87) and Istiqlal (81). The PJD suffered a historic defeat, losing 112 seats and keeping just 13 .

A three-party government Akhannouch was appointed Head of Government and on 7 October 2021 formed a comfortable majority of three parties: the RNI, the PAM and Istiqlal .
