After Mohand Laenser was elected Secretary-General of the Popular Movement in 1986, its historic founder Mahjoubi Aherdane founded the National Popular Movement in 1991 .
It won 25 seats in 1993, 19 in 1997 and 18 in 2002 , and took part in the Alternance government. In 2006 it merged back into the Popular Movement .
