Founding The Popular Movement was founded on 28 September 1957 by Mahjoubi Aherdane and Abdelkrim al-Khatib as a counterweight to Istiqlal's post-independence dominance, drawing on a rural and Amazigh base . It joined the Front for the Defence of Constitutional Institutions in 1963 and won 60 seats in 1970 .
Splits and reunification In 1967 al-Khatib left to found the Popular Democratic and Constitutional Movement . In 1986 Mohand Laenser became Secretary-General, and Aherdane founded the National Popular Movement in 1991 . In 2006 the Popular Movement reunited with the National Popular Movement and the Democratic Union , winning 41 seats in 2007 .
Government partner The movement sat in the Benkirane and Othmani governments (2012–2021) , moved into opposition after 2021, and elected Mohamed Ouzzine Secretary-General in 2022 . In 2026 it won 29 seats, and Ouzzine was re-elected in Ifrane .
