From Communist Party to Progress and Socialism The party's roots lie in the Moroccan Communist Party, founded in 1943 and dissolved by court order in 1960. Ali Yata refounded it as the Party of Liberation and Socialism, which was also banned, before it was recognised as the Party of Progress and Socialism in August 1974 .
From opposition to government The party grew from one seat in 1977 to ten in 1993 . In 1997 a group broke away to form the Front of Democratic Forces . The PPS sat in every government from 1998 to 2019 — from Youssoufi to Othmani — including the two PJD-led governments, an unusual left–Islamist alliance .
Opposition and best result It left the Othmani government in October 2019 and in 2021 won 22 seats, its best-ever result, allowing it to form its first parliamentary group . In 2026 it won 19 seats .
