Founded in 1978 by "independent" MPs, it has sat in most governments since 1998, won the 2021 election and led the Government, then slipped to second place in 2026.

From "independents" to a party In the 1977 election "independent" candidates won 141 seats , and in 1978 they organised themselves as the National Rally of Independents under Prime Minister Ahmed Osman . The party won 61 seats in 1984 and 41 in 1993 .
A party of government It took part in the 1998 Alternance government and most subsequent governments . After the 2011 election (52 seats) it went into opposition, then replaced Istiqlal in the Benkirane government in 2013 . Aziz Akhannouch was elected party president in 2016 and played a pivotal role in the coalition talks after the 2016 election .
Peak, then setback The party won the 2021 election with 102 seats and Akhannouch became Head of Government . On 7 February 2026 Mohamed Chaouki was elected party president in place of Akhannouch at an extraordinary congress . In the 2026 election the party lost 36 seats and came second with 66 .
