The National Union of Popular Forces was founded in 1959 when Istiqlal's left wing broke away under Mehdi Ben Barka and Abdallah Ibrahim, who was then heading the Government (1958–1960) .
It won 28 seats in the 1963 election and then endured years of repression; Mehdi Ben Barka was abducted in Paris in 1965 . It boycotted the 1970 election and split in the early 1970s: in 1975 the Rabat wing became the Socialist Union of Popular Forces , while another wing continued with a marginal role.
